KUALA LUMPUR: For RM10 a month, school dropouts can opt out of selling food on the dusty roadside to being a chef in a chic culinary outlet.
Those who dropped out even at primary school level can enrol in any of the 47 skills courses offered at all the community colleges nationwide to obtain the National Modular Certificate as no academic prerequisite is required.
Higher Education Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin said the certificate would make school dropouts more marketable.
The students could graduate within three to six months.
The courses are divided into nine key areas covering the repair of refrigerators and air-conditioners, aquaculture, light vehicle servicing, wiring, building maintenance, boat repairs and maintenance, tourist management, hotel operations and culinary sectors.
“There is no prerequisite,” he told reporters after the launch of a programme to strengthen community colleges by the Deputy Prime Minister yesterday.
Previously, certificate courses took two years to complete, and required a Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia.
The first batch of students to undergo the modular system started their courses on Tuesday.
Also included are apprenticeship programmes aimed at ensuring that industries play a part in producing suitable workers.
He added that the ministry aimed to obtain accreditation from professional bodies for community college certificates.
