KUALA LUMPUR: Community colleges will now be offering shorter courses of between three and six months instead of two years.
The shorter courses under the National Modular Skills Certificate programme is designed to attract more students.
The Higher Education Ministry is also drawing up a Knowledge Transfer Programme with universities to enable community colleges to benefit from the expertise and research conducted by universities.
Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin said the new initiative would allow community colleges to contribute to the the nation's growing need for a skilled workforce.
He said strengthening community colleges was consistent with the government's plans to provide greater access to education for the public.
"Providing more education opportunities will create a skilled workforce to fulfil the nation's needs.
"This is important as the country is going through a critical economic transition period, namely, from a middle income to a high-income nation," he said.
Speaking to participants at a community college programme yesterday, Muhyiddin said he was confident the new measures would turn community colleges into the main catalyst in churning out a highly skilled and informed society.
"Colleges must be proactive and innovative in developing their curriculum, human resource training, strengthening the structure of the institution as well as encouraging cooperation with industry."
Speaking to the press later, Higher Education Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Khaled Nordin said there were currently 50,000 places in various community colleges nationwide for the National Modular Skills Certificate programme.
This represents half of the 100,000 individuals who are unable to proceed to university, he added.
"These are the ones who either fail their Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia or pass, but don't do well enough to further their education.
"Community colleges will provide these students a second chance to pick themselves up and learn some new skills.
"Next year, 80,000 places will be available for students."
